Outdoor Clothing

Whilst we at Compton Archery can retreat indoors when it’s raining or the wind is very high, many archery clubs don’t have that luxury and have to shoot outside no matter what the weather during the outdoor season. If you attend competitions outside you also have to be prepared to shoot in poor weather. If you’re cold, you won’t shoot as well, so it’s worth investing in some close fitting clothing to help and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are some tips:

Thin Layers are Key! Rather than a few thick layers, when doing archery you are better off wearing multiple thin layers that are close fitting. These are more easily removed to control temperature too.

A hat. These can keep the sun off and can also keep the heat in. They might also keep the rain out of your eyes! A bucket hat is a typical archers choice as it doesn’t have a long peak to get in the way, but anything will do if you can make it work.

Long sleeved thermal tops. These can be bought from sports shops for as little as £5 and are normally aimed at football/rugby training or cycling. They are perfect for archery as they are close fitting but are designed to allow sports movement and you can wear them under anything.

A gilet (body warmer). As long as it’s a fairly close fitting one, these can work well to keep your body warm but leave your arms free from annoying loose sleeves. (Puffy down ones will NOT do!). There are even electrically warmed versions now!

Running/cycling arm warmers. These are very common with runners and cyclists – they are essentially tubes of lycra with a thin fleece inside which you can put on and off over other clothing as you need. Again, they are perfect for archery as they are close fitting. These plus a gilet might be the ideal cold weather combo!

Chest Guard. Remember that if you need to you can use an archery chest guard to keep bulkier clothing close to your chest.

Shoes. Don’t forget your footwear in archery. A stable base to shoot from is key so steer clear of very bouncy sports trainers and use some sturdier walking type shoes with a stiffer sole. Never use open toe shoes on an archery field for obvious safety reasons.

Heaters! USB re-chargeable hand warmers are now available and can be a nice addition when its very cold.

Other Items. Whilst strictly not clothing, a waterproof picnic blanket or cheap tarp is always useful to have handy to a) sit on and b) throw over your kit if it rains! Above all, be prepared for all weathers no matter what the weather report is looking like!
