Introduction to Archery

Archery is the art, sport, practice or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus meaning anything arched or curved. Historically archery was used for hunting and combat but in modern times it’s mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity.

There are various disciplines of archery including target, field & clout. Within each of these disciplines you will find various types of equipment being used including recurve, compound, long & flat bows. Some of these bows are very traditional wooden bows whilst others are cutting edge Olympic target bows made out of composite materials.

Contrary to popular opinion we are not a bunch of Robin Hood wannabees running around woods in green tights (well, not many of us).

Archery is a very inclusive sport which can be practiced at any age and practically any physical condition. We have archers as young as 7 and old as 90 in all shapes and sizes. Archery is not so much about strength as it is about skill and mental focus.

At Compton archery we focus on target archery using recurve bows, although we welcome other types of bows.

The archery community is a very friendly one and the social side is definitely a big part of making it so much fun to be a part of.
